A five-run, fourth inning was just what the Palestine-Wheatley Lady Patriots needed to post an 11-1 win over Bradford to secure a doubleheader sweep in high school softball Thursday.
Powered by three runs each from Mary Beth Foster and Rachel Cook, the Lady Patriots broke a 1-1 tie with the five run fourth inning to lead 6-1.
P-W added a single run in the fifth and capped the win with a four-run sixth inning.
P-W banged out 17 hits to help score the 11 runs. Bradford was held to one run on three hits.
Three P-W players, Summer Maxwell, Foster and Macayla Henry collected three hits each while Autum Maxwell, Caroline Jones and Sarah Brewer finished with two base hits each.
Bradford took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Bailey Boyce drove in the first run with an RBI single.
P-W tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third on Foster’s solo home run.
In the fourth Henry singled off of Boyce, driving in one run, Summer Maxwell homered off of Boyce, driving in two runs, and Jones singled off of Boyce, driving in one run.
Palestine-Wheatley Lady Patriots Varsity collected 17 hits.
Maxwell picked up the pitching victory, working six innings and giving up the one run on three hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
In the first game of the scheduled doubleheader, Sarah Brewer drove in four runs to lead the Lady Patriots to a 6-4 win over Bradford.
Brewer drove in runs on a groundout in the second and a stolen base in the fourth.
Palestine-Wheatley took the lead on a groundout in the second inning when Brewer grounded out, scoring one run and added three runs in the fourth inning.
P-W is scheduled to host Little Rock Parkview today at the Palestine Sports Complex and will play in the Batesville Lady Pioneer Classic on Saturday.
