A Palestine woman was arrested yesterday after allegedly fighting with a police officer during a traffic stop.
Samantha Atkinson, 36, was arrested Thursday afternoon on multiple charges, including battery and drunk driving.
According to a St. Francis County Sheriff's Office report, Atkinson allegedly nearly struck a deputy’s vehicle head on while traveling down Main Street. The deputy reportedly believed Atkinson was under the influence of alcohol.
When the officer made contact with Atkinson, she allegedly became combative and began fighting with the officer. According to the report, the officer called for backup.
According to the SFCSO report, Atkinson was placed in the back of a police cruiser, and she attempted to kick out the back window. An officer opened the door, and Atkinson allegedly started yelling and cursing.
Two bottles of alcohol were reportedly found in the vehicle in the front passenger floorboard. According to the report, one bottle was empty and the other was full.
Atkinson was transported to the St. Francis County Jail where officers attempted to administer field sobriety tests. The officers reported that Atkinson refused to comply with multiple requests for field sobriety tests. Atkinson reportedly consented to a blood alcohol content test but refused to comply with the officer when the test was administered.
Atkinson is charged with driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to a blood alcohol test, disorderly conduct, reckless driving and third-degree battery. She has since been released from the St. Francis County Jail.
