AutoZone celebrated 35 years in business Tuesday with an event at its first location, which is the Forrest City AutoZone located at the intersection of Broadway and Division streets. On July 4, 1979, Auto Shack, which later became AutoZone, opened on Division Street near the Oak Street intersection. From that first store, the company has expanded to 5,000 stores with more than 70,000 employees worldwide. Forrest City was well represented during Tuesday’s festivities. Kristen Wright, left, senior vice president, general counsel and secretary for customer satisfaction, speaks during the ceremony as company president and CEO Bill Rhodes holds a plaque commemorating the 35th anniversary. Also pictured, from left, are Forrest City natives Ronnie Fletcher and Teresa Jacobs. Fletcher recorded the company’s first sale and has been with AutoZone for 37 years. He worked with Doc Crain, the first manager of the Forrest City store. A similar plaque was given to Crain’s family. Jacobs, who now works in the corporate office in Memphis, began her career in Forrest City 30 years ago. Photo by Kendall Owens.
