Breathing right

Students in Keith Montgomery’s sixth grade class at KIPP Forrest City participate in a yoga lesson this morning, learning simple techniques to maintain a healthy body, as well as a healthy state of mind. Judy Sweet, 4-H program assistant with the St. Francis County Extension Office, demonstrates the proper “belly breathing” technique as students follow along. Sweet told the students “belly breathing” with the use of the diaphragm is how the human body is designed to breathe and most humans are born doing so, but the practice often becomes unnatural to the body as it ages and develops poor posture, constricting the diaphragm.
