The UAPB Golden Lions football team captured the school’s first outright football championship of any kind Saturday when they defeated Jackson State 24-21 in overtime to win the Southwestern Athletic Conference title in a game played in Birmingham, Ala. UAPB, with their 10-2 season, becomes the first Golden Lions team to win 10 games in a season. UAPB shared the SWAC title in 1966 with three other schools. UAPB is head coached by former Washington Redskins linebacker Monte Coleman, who won three Super Bowls in 16 seasons. The team stopped Sunday at the Ole Sawmill in Forrest City on their way back to Pine Bluff. Submitted photo.
