Testing canners

A canner testing event was held today at the St. Francis County Extension Office. According to Holly Valentine, Extension Agent-Family and Consumer Science, canners must be tested to ensure that food being canned does not spoil. Valentine also added that while today was set aside as a testing date, canners can be tested at any time at the office in the SFC Courthouse. Valentine is shown testing a canner lid. Ribs for a good cause

The City of Colt held the ninth annual Blazin’ Fundraizin’ festival Saturday, and there was food and fun for everyone. One of the main draws to the annual event are the ribs prepared by the Colt Volunteer Fire Department. Lt. Frank Powell, left, and volunteer firefighter Josh Keeler check one of several slabs cooked during the event. The proceeds from the rib sale, along with other refreshments such as grilled chicken and hot dogs, will assist the fire department with equipment purchases. Photo by Kendall Owens.

Safety check

When people think of equipment for the Forrest City Water Utility, they probably think of backhoes and water lines, but working oxygen tanks and breathing masks are very important too. Edward Gregory, the utility’s water treatment supervisor, checks a mask at the FCWU Water Plant. Gregory explained that it is possible that chlorine stored at the facility could leak, so safety equipment is necessary. Photo by Alan Smith.
