33rd annual Colt Pioneer Day set for Saturday at Stone House

The Colt Community Development Corporation is planning to host its 33rd annual Colt Pioneer Day celebration on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., on the lawn of the William Stone House in Colt. Colt CDC member Walter Meals said the event will feature gospel singing, food and historical exhibits, along with booths for handcrafted items and information. "This will be our 33rd year for the Pioneer Day event," said Meals. "We have a number of singers coming this year to entertain everyone. We have gospel music every year and we have people lined up to sing from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. This is not necessarily the order that the singers will be in because, sometimes, we have to swap out slots if they have something come up and can't be there until later or if they have something later and they need to be done early. "We will have Tommie Milton, Rhonda Gray and Mary Meek,” continued Meals. "We will also have Linda Cagle, the Calvert family from Southside Missionary Baptist Church in Wynne, the Mathews Family, Eugene Powell, Tommy Talley and Brother Brian Frames performing during our event. Some groups will sing for 30 minutes and some will sing for an hour." Meals said the group will once again be serving their famous beans and cornbread at the event in the Snack Shack. "The only way we make any money from this fundraiser is through our Snack Shack. In addition to our famous beans and cornbread, we will also be serving nachos, hamburgers, hot dogs, chili pies and assorted soft drinks. We use these funds that we raise to keep the William Stone House in working order and to take care of our historical exhibits,” said Meals. He added that people have already expressed their excitement for this year’s festivities. "We are a non-profit and 501(c)3 so we do not get state, county or federal funds for what we do," said Meals. "The only funds we receive are from donations and from our Christmas House fundraiser and our chicken and dumplings fundraiser. It seems like we will have a lot of people here for the Pioneer Day event. A lot of people have said they are excited for it and that they plan to be there." Meals said organizations and churches from surrounding counties set up booths and interact with visitors during the event. "There will be plenty of booths set up that day for people to visit," said Meals. "We already have several new vendors who have never been here before planning to have a booth. We are hoping for a big festival this year. We are going to have canopies and things out there for shade as well. This is really a community event. There are people from Lee, Cross and St. Francis counties who come. Different churches and other community organizations from the surrounding area come each year as well." According to Meals, anyone who wants to attend should plan to bring a lawn chairs and enjoy food, music and different activities throughout the day. "Please come out and enjoy the festivities with us," said Meals. "Have will some good food, listen to the different gospel acts and visit with our vendors. Bring your lawn chairs and check out all we have to offer at the Colt Pioneer Day festival."
