LC Health Unit plans mass clinic to give flu shots

The Lee County Health Unit is planning to hold its annual flu shot clinic later this month. The date for this year’s clinic is Tuesday, Sept. 23. The clinic, located at 141 N. Hicky Road in Marianna, will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., to ensure everyone who wants to get the flu shot has an opportunity to take it. LCHU Administrator Kyleigh Kennedy said that annually, the clinic sets one day aside to focus on giving flu shots. "Each year we set the mass flu clinic date and on that’s our focus for that day,” said Kennedy. “A lot of people want to come to the health unit when that’s our focus because we get them in and out fast.” Kennedy said the event will be a walk-in clinic and those seeking the shot will need to complete paperwork before getting the vaccine. “They will need to bring their insurance card if they have one and we will bill the insurance company,” said Kennedy, adding that those who do not have insurance will not be charged. “If you don’t have insurance you won’t be charged anything. Nothing will have to be paid out of pocket.” Kennedy said the mass flu clinic is convenient for local businesses, such as nursing homes, whose staff is required to get the vaccine. “Once we start giving the shots, many of our businesses will send several people at one time so they can get vaccinated.” Kennedy noted that the clinic will continue to have the flu shot available after the mass clinic has concluded. “Those who don’t come in on Sept. 23 to get the shots will still be able to get it at the clinic but will have to be worked in as a time slot becomes available,” she said. Kennedy said that although she’s received no information this year in regard to how health officials are expecting the flu season to be, she still encourages everyone to get the vaccine. “Everyone from six months on up can get the flu shot,” she said. Kennedy said those who still want to get the Covid vaccine may do so at the health department, but offi cials there need to be notified ahead of time to ensure the vaccine is at the office. “We don’t keep a stock of everything at every clinic now because people are not getting the Covid vaccine as frequently as they were when it first came out, but we can have whatever is needed by the next day,” said Kennedy. “If someone wants the Covid vaccine, we can make it happen.” Kennedy said health department officials will also be administering the flu vac cine to students and staff in the Lee County School District and at Lee Academy. “Children in both school settings should be bringing home a form for their par ents in the next few days to determine whether or not their child can have the vac cine,” said Kennedy. “Those forms should be returned to the school nurse who works with us and retrieves the students when we get there to administer the shots. We will also have the vaccine available for school personnel who want it. “We’re hoping to be done in Lee County by the first week in October,” added Kennedy.
