Annual triathlon set for Saturday from VCSP to FC

The 42nd Annual MightyMite Triathlon will commence on Saturday with the swimming portion beginning at Village Creek State Park’s Lake Dunn at 8 a.m. According to Adam Shelton, with Start 2 Finish Event Management in Memphis, the MightyMite Triathlon in Forrest City may be one of the longest consecutively running triathlons in the United States. "This is the 42nd annual. This may be one of the top five longest running triathlons in the country, consecutively running events," said Shelton. "This is what we call a point, to point, to point event, where we start at Lake Dunn at Village Creek State Park. They will come out of the state park and cyclists will ride down to East Arkansas Community College where they will then run to our new finish line." Shelton explained that in the past, the finish line had been located at in front of the Campbell House on Forrest Street in Forrest City, but that has been changed for this year’s event. "We are changing our finish line from the Campbell House to the Forrest City Area Chamber of Commerce," said Shelton. "They have always been a partner of this event, but they are becoming more of a invested partner of the event. They are providing post-race food, beverages and a post-race party atmosphere at the Chamber. They will be cooking things like burgers and hot dogs and have adult beverages and things like that for those who are of age this year." According to Shelton, the online list of race participants shows who is registered and where they are from. At this time, the only Forrest City participant registered is long-time triathlete and resident Mallory Nimocks. "Right now, we are just shy of 100 people and that puts us on track with our metrics to be about what we average for the year, which is 130 or 140," said Shelton. "We usually have about that many register with about 120 that actually participating on race day. There is a list online where you can see the current registered number of participants, their names and where they are from." The majority of participants registered at this time are from Memphis, with 16 participants being from that city. Nine Little Rock residents have registered to participate. Shelton shared that those interested in participating may still register online until 7 a.m., on Saturday. "Online registration is open through at mightymitetri.raceroster.com, " said Shelton. "Online registration will be open until the race moves from transition one up to the lake, which is 7 a.m. People can register all the way up to the morning of the race. This is open to the public and everyone is welcome to come out and watch the event. We put the first swimmer in the water at 8 a.m. We expect the first finisher at the Chamber at about 8:45 or 8:48. Sometime in that timeframe." According to Shelton, the group is in need of volunteers for the event and a link to sign up to help can be found on the registration website. "Not only can the public come out and watch, but we would love their support to volunteer for the event," said Shelton. "We have a need for volunteers for things like water stations along the course, handing out finisher medals at the finish line and helping with food distribution at the Chamber. There is a volunteer link on the registration website if people are interested in signing up to help out."
