A&P Commission approves funding for gospel singing event

The Forrest City Advertising and Promotion Commission this week again approved funding for the annual A Night of Singing in the Delta event. Commissioners Louise Fields, Y.K. Patel, Angela Towner and Ashley Griffith were absent from the meeting. However, Towner and Griffith gave their proxy votes to commissioners Justin Reeves and Judy Sweet, respectively. According to the request for support submitted by Miles Kimble for A Night of Singing in the Delta, the event has grown significantly over the 12 years it has been held. "For 12 consecutive years, A Night of Singing in the Delta has been hosted, with the Forrest City A&P Commission providing support for 10 of those 12 years," Kimble wrote. "The event has drawn a crowd of over 800, comprising of both local and out-of-state visitors, in addition to more than 20 vendors from multiple states. A Night of Singing in the Delta has achieved remarkable growth and earned national acclaim for its outstanding organization within the gospel music scene. This year's event will feature another distinguished national recording artist. "The events we have co- hosted with the A&P Commission have not only received positive press, but have also inspired other cities to emulate our approach," continued Kimble. The request names The Brown Singers, Darrel Petties, Raynetra Sheppard, Rachel R. Burrell, Cameron McMath, Karen Adams, Michael Keaton, Jarvis Brooks, Cornelius Moore, James Jones, Arthur Hill Jr., Felicia Phillips-Golatt, Terry Burgess Sr., Quiintrell Spinks, TreShawna Starks, Kenneth L. Robinson, Jarrett Selvy, Roslyn West, Annie Lindsey and Angela Norment as performers during the event. A&P Commission Chairman Justin Reeves said this is one of his favorite events to fund through the A&P Commission. "This is an event that we have been doing for a long time and it is probably the largest event we fund, as far as the number of people who come to town at one place at any given time," said Reeves. "This is put on by Miles Kimble and this year he is requesting $24,750. That is down a little bit from last year's request. This is one of my favorite things that we do. Miles got this gospel singing kicked off some years ago and it has been a big success." The motion to approve the funding was passed unanimously. The commission also approved its contract with the Times-Herald for advertising and promotions throughout the year. "This is something we did last year," said Reeves. "Multiple years ago, we had Sugarditch. The Times-Herald stepped into that role to do our targeted marketing and other advertising. The only thing they are doing differently this year is they are going to add a digital community calendar. They are going to work with all different facets of the city like the museum, A&P and just anyone who has something to add to the calendar. I will make a motion to approve the contract."
