A&P funds requests for local groups

The Forrest City Advertising and Promotion Commission this week voted to support four requests for funding. The group met Wednesday morning, via a phone poll, from the Forrest City Area Chamber of Commerce office. Commissioner Louise Fields was unavailable to be reached by telephone. Commissioners approved requests from the St. Francis County Museum, the Delta Jubulaires Yearly Gospel Singing, the SFC Master Gardeners and the Forrest City Downtown Revitalization Project. The group denied a funding request from the Forrest City School District. The request for the museum, made by curator Jason Ring, was for the annual sponsorship of the museum’s advertising. The $7,682.40 request was unanimously funded by commissioners, with former curator, current curator emeritus and A&P Commissioner Judy Sweet abstaining from the vote. The group received a request for $8,600 from the Delta Jubulaires group for their annual gospel singing that is celebrating its 77th year. According to the request, the event, which is set to be held on Saturday, July 26, in Forrest City, has been bringing revenue into the city for years by "spreading the gospel through singing." Sweet made a recommendation to provide the group with $4,300 to help with radio and print advertising, which was unanimously approved. Commissioners received a request from the SFC Master Gardeners for $1,000 to help fund a Forrest City Post Office project for the gardens at that facility. According to the request, presented by Sarah Stone with the SFC Extension Office, the funds will be used to repair the damaged back flow on the sprinkler system. "Vandalism has caused the back flow valve to malfunction, rendering the system inoperable," Stone wrote in the request. "Replacing the back flow preventer is crucial for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the watering system, preventing contaminated water from flowing back into the main supply and protecting public health and system integrity. These funds will be used to repair the damaged back flow preventer on the sprinkler system at the Post Office project that the St. Francis County Master Gardeners maintain." Commissioners moved unanimously to fund the request. The Forrest City Downtown Revitalization Project received approval for half of the funds the group requested. The group asked for $20,500 to enhance the high-traffic areas of Forrest City with murals. The request, made by Tonya Jones, who chairs the group. "The request for A&P funding is to allow the Forrest City Downtown Revitalization Project to enhance the high-traffic areas of Forrest City with colorful murals close to State Highways 1 and 70," wrote Jones. "Both highways are heavily traveled. This will include areas north to south and east to west. The FCDRP, as part of our purpose, is to attract locals and visitors to our downtown areas." Sweet made a recommendation to cut the request in half and fund the group with $10,250 for the murals. Commissioner unanimously voted in favor of the recommendation. The group also received a request from the Forrest City School District for a Champion Soiree, set for Thursday, May 22, at the Forrest City Civic Center. The request, submitted by FCSD Superintendent Dr. Tiffany Hardrick, was for $13,000 to be used for seed money for the event. According to the request, the funds would be used for a number of different items for the first-time event. She said the funds would support facility rental, local advertising, decorations, entertainment, a local caterer, videography and general supplies. Hardrick stated in the request that the event would be an opportunity to acknowledge and share student achievement results and why one should choose Forrest City. "The event is not designed to make revenue," Hardrick wrote in the request. "It is designed to acknowledge and showcase teacher talent and positive district growth. Schools are the number one factor to determine if families live in a community. "The FCSD experienced positive student growth and demonstrated the Delta offers a great educational experience," Hardrick continued. "This event is an opportunity to acknowledge and share student achievement results and why you should choose Forrest City." The event, which according to commission chairman Justin Reeves is by invitation only, goes against the funding rules established by the Commission. Funding for the event failed after a vote of three to one. Commissioner Larry Freeman voted to fund the event. Commissioners Sweet, Angela Towner and Ashley Griffith voted against it.
