Arts and Music Festival scheduled for Saturday in FC

The Forrest City Downtown Revitalization Project will host an Arts and Music Festival on Saturday, May 16, bringing an afternoon of live entertainment, local vendors and family friendly activities to Front Street. The festival will highlight Forrest City’s new downtown murals, “Music Alley,” which pay tribute to notable musicians connected to the area and the region’s musical heritage. “We thought we could pay homage to some of the greats that are from around here or who have been through this area,” said organizer Ann Claire Vaccaro. “Some, like Johnny Cash, are featured in the mural. They spent a week or two here when making the movie about him. “We want to show them off and we want to have people come down and have a celebration,” Vaccaro added. “Since it’s Music Alley, we wanted to add some music to it. And we wanted to add art to it since we have art. We have a lot of talented people around this area.” A lineup of regional and local performers will take the stage throughout the afternoon. Jana Calvert will open the event with the National Anthem, followed by performances from Charlie Rich Jr., son of the late music legend Charlie Rich, and Brodie Johnson Managing Editor The annual Run for the Wall motorcycle ride to Washington, D.C., will once again make a stop in Forrest City. Riders are scheduled to arrive at Ridgewood Baptist Church, located on Highway 1 North, about 5:30 p.m., Sunday, May 17. Event organizer Larry Jones said he hopes to see a large turnout of people lining Highway 1, north of Interstate 40, to welcome the riders into Forrest City. "The plan is to have the flags up like the Forrest City Fire Department has done in the past,” said Jones. “I hope we can get a lot of people to come out and line up along Highway 1, just north of the interstate, to welcome these riders into our town. I don’t know if they will all be here in Forrest City because riders join up as the event makes its way across the country." According to Jones, the church will have a lot of work to do to prepare for the riders' arrival Sunday evening following church service Sunday morning. See STOP on Page 2 Hilary J. Additional performers will include Michael Garner, a Palestine-Wheatley student and recent “American Idol” contestant, Joylee Hancock III, also known as “Squirt Kelly,” who will perform songs made famous by Al Green and Ray Charles, the band Live Wire, serving as the house band, and Terry Rogers, who will perform choreographed dance numbers from iconic movies and music videos. In addition to live music, the festival will feature food trucks, art vendors and activities for all ages. Vendors will include Delta Grub Shack, an Italian ice truck and Stones Throw Micro Brewery. A designated children’s area will include face painting, yard games and interactive activities such as freeze dance. Those interested in participating as an art vendor can find an application on the Forrest City Downtown Revitalization Project’s Facebook page. A $10 fee is required, and applications must be submitted by May 15. The event, scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m., is free and open to the public. Organizers encourage attendees to bring their own chairs, as seating will be limited. “This is about celebrating our music, our art and our community,” Vaccaro said. “We’re excited to invite everyone downtown to enjoy it.”
