Commission certifies poll workers, prepares for election

The St. Francis County Election Commission recently certified the workers list and logic and accuracy testing for the annual school election set for Tuesday, May 13. Commissioner Frederick Freeman was absent from the meeting. Commission Chair Patti Long said the workers list looks good and could be approved for the upcoming election. "I took a gander through it and I didn't see anything that caused me any heartburn,” said Long. “We know that at certain polls we are going to need more people than we are going to need at other sites. That helps us because we know our polling sites. The workers list looks good to me, if nobody else sees any issues." Long explained that the results of the recent logic and accuracy testing need to also be approved prior to the election. "We need to also certify our L&A testing," said Long. "We have the unofficial results here in front of us. It was just tedious with the way we have to do it now. I know it was tedious. It is a lot when you do it the regular way, but the way we have to do it now with the precinct parts it is just triple tedious. We need to approve and certify this testing." The commission unanimously voted to certify the results of the testing. Long asked SFC Election Coordinator Sandra Wright if there had been any issues with the recent change in polling sites in Widener. "Have we had any more beef over our change in Widener?” asked Long. "Not to me, but I believe they are beating Tammy (Thomas) up over it," said Wright. "They are saying it is her fault. We had a meeting the other night and people were asking about it so I told them the truth, that we were having trouble gaining access to the old site over the past four or five elections. The opening of the polls was over 30 minutes late because they could not get in. We can't do that because we have rules and regulations to follow." "No one has contacted me," said Long. "We have to be open by 7:30 a.m. and voting," said Wright. "The Community Center was our first choice as it is convenient and it is a nice facility, but we can't get in." During the meeting, commissioners also heard an update from SFC County Clerk Chief Deputy Pearl Crumpton regarding the recent purchase of a cart for the storage and charging of election tablets, which has arrived and been put into service. "We have our new cart and it is pretty neat," said Crumpton. "Derrick (Parker) put it together for me and it should be able to fit all of our tablets. It has two outlets on it, but it is real simple, it is pretty neat and I am looking forward to using it. It will charge all of the tablets for us. This allows me to take the whole cart out and make sure they are all working without having to go back and forth getting different tablets."
