Cotton Pickin’ Festival set for Friday, Saturday

Caldwell is preparing to welcome residents and visitors this weekend to its 23rd annual Cotton Pickin’ Festival at Caldwell Park. The two-day festival will feature live music, children’s activities, bingo, a beauty pageant and more, with most activities free of charge. Events will kick off on Friday, Sept. 25, with bingo at 6 p.m., followed by live music from Open Range with Bo Renfro at 6:30 p.m. Saturday’s activities will begin with a pancake breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m., hosted by the Christian Motorcyclists Association. Bingo will begin at noon, followed by children’s games and activities at 1 p.m. Activities for children will include bounce houses, a cake walk, train rides and several new attractions this year. “New this year we’ll have a petting zoo, pony rides and an inflatable water slide,” Caldwell Mayor Gary Hughes said. “Everything is free, except food from the firemen’s concession stand.” The Cotton Pickin’ Queen Beauty Pageant will begin at 3 p.m., Saturday. Contestants ages three to 12 will compete in two age divisions, ages three to six and seven to 12. Pageant rehearsal is scheduled for this evening, Thursday, Sept. 24, at 6 p.m., at the Caldwell Park, located along Highway 1 in Caldwell. Pageant coordinator Brandi Maxwell said contestants will be judged on their outfits and personalities. “We want the kids to have fun and just be themselves,” Maxwell said. “This is all about making memories, having fun and enjoying the day.” The entry fee for the pageant is $5. For more information or to register, contact Maxwell at 870-317 6439. Saturday afternoon’s entertainment will continue with former American Idol contestant Michael Garner performing at 4 p.m., followed by the Live Wire Band from 5 to 7 p.m. Hughes encourages residents from Caldwell and surrounding communities to attend the annual celebration. “We encourage everyone to come out to the festival,” Hughes said. “This is a day about being together, reminiscing with old friends and meeting new acquaintances.”
