Daugherty, Poteat announce purchase of Chez Weenie gift shop in Forrest City

Chez Weenie in Forrest City has been sold to a new mother daughter duo. Originally opened in 2001, at 624 E. Garland Street in Forrest City by Weston Lewey and her mother, the late Edwene McCollum, the store is now owned by Paige Daugherty and her mother, Dena Poteat. Daugherty and Poteat, who finalized the purchase this week, plan to make some changes over the weekend before reopening under their ownership at 10 a.m., Tuesday. Owning a business is not new to Daugherty, who has the Sassy Image Hair Salon in Forrest City. Poteat retired a few years ago from her role as administrator at the St. Francis County Health Department, after which she worked part-time at the Antique Rose with original owners Sonya Poe and Meredith Reeves and current owner Emily Burns. Poteat said Burns has been “very understanding” about them purchasing the gift shop. “Emily has been so sweet and very supportive about this whole thing,” she said. “I love Emily, we’re friends. I still want people to shop at Antique Rose, too. We offer different things and we’re going to remain friends.” Poteat explained that Daugherty has often talked about opening a boutique. “Really and truly, Paige has always wanted to do some kind of boutique or something. She talked about putting it in Sassy Image but there’s just not enough room there for that,” Poteat said. “When this came along, at first we were like, no, no, no. I was out because I’m really ready to retire, but after we talked about it, it looks like a really good opportunity for Paige to have down the road.” At this time, Poteat said they do not plan to make major changes. “Everything will be the same for now, the logo, phone number, everything,” she said. “We will have the same staff that is there now. Paige is planning to work one day a week at the store and I all be there a lot of the time. “We do plan on keeping some of the lines that are already there, but we will be adding other lines and dropping some as we go along,” said Poteat. “We want to talk with our customers and see what they want because we know there are things we could put in the store that people would like to have that we might not currently have. We would love feedback from the community and our customers about what they would like to see, what they want. It’s still going to mainly remain a gift store. We don’t plan on handling clothing right now.” Poteat and Daugherty will spend the next few days working at the store to get it ready to reopen Tuesday when they plan to have a “big sale,” to hopefully be able to make room for some new items. The store is currently open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturdays. “We plan to start opening on Mondays in the very near future, but we want to get some new merchandise and get everything worked out first,” said Poteat. “As we get closer to the holidays, we’ll be open longer hours, and during December, we plan to be open each Sunday afternoon leading up to Christmas.” The duo has other plans for the business outside of merchandise, such as events for the community to draw in customers. “We’re going to have some special events to try and get people to come out,” she said. “We’re certainly open to organizations who might want to have something at our shop. “We need some new blood and younger ideas coming into the store,” Poteat continued. Poteat invites everyone to stop by and shop or just to visit and see the changes they’re making to the business. “We love Forrest City and want to be a great community partner,” she added.
