FC A&P funds annual Rumble, holiday parades

The Forrest City Advertising and Promotion Commission recently funded three annual events and agreed to continue their annual advertising in the Delta Byways magazine. The group unanimously funded the annual Rumble on the Ridge Basketball Tournament, the Forrest Street Halloween Parade and the Forrest City Community Christmas Parade. The Rumble on the Ridge is set for Nov. 25 through 28 at Dwight Lofton Mustang Arena. The Rumble on the Ridge, in cooperation with the Forrest City Booster Club, is expecting 12 teams for tournament play this year and requested $42,000 in funding for advertising and sponsorship. A&P Commission Chairman Justin Reeves said the group should stick with their plan of cutting funding for this event as they have for all other events this year. "Looks like last year, they spent a total of $39,919 and they are asking for $42,000 this year. I think we have to stick with our plan of what we have been doing here and trim a little bit,” said Reeves. "I make a motion that we approve up to $40,000 this year," said commissioner Judy Sweet. Commissioners voted unanimously to fund up to $40,000 for the tournament. The funding request from the Halloween Parade committee was for $5,000 to supply volunteers with enough candy to give kids a safe and fun Halloween experience. Reeves told commissioners this group has never used its full requested amount and always leaves left over funds with the A&P. "Everything has gone up. This group has always been good stewards of our money. I don't know that they have ever used their full request. We usually have quite a bit left over in the coffers here for the A&P. It is a little different time and setup than normal, but I still think it will be a good turnout. It will be on a Saturday this year. "I know we have cut back on everybody all year," continued Reeves. "This group has never used their funding in its entirety. Last year, they requested $5,000 and only used $3,500. Commissioners agreed to give the group up to $5,000 again this year. The request for support for the annual Community Christmas Parade was for $6,000 to fund advertising, plaques, trophies, banners, signs, printing, postage, judges, parade officials, band stipends, portable toilets and other supplies for the event. Event organizer Sheila Lieblong told commissioners that organizers hope to bring in more bands for this year’s parade, that will once again start at the Forrest City Civic Center. "We are asking for up to $6,000," said Lieblong. "Last year, we requested that much and it was approved, but we only spent $2,854. We are hoping to get more bands this year and we do pay them a stipend of $200 just to help cover the gas. I don't see us using that much, but it would be nice to have it just in case we need it." The parade is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 4. The group voted unanimously to fund the requested amount. Reeves told commissioners that it was time to reconsider funds for the group’s bi-annual Delta Byways advertising. "We also have our annual Delta Byways advertisement," said Reeves. "We have been doing this for a long time. This looks like a lot of money but this amount will cover us for two years. The last payment we made was for two years. It is a lot of advertising. It looks like everything they have quoted us that Sheila and I have looked at and liked is $16,482.50. That would cover our online presence as well as all of the guides that go out." According to Reeves, the money spent on this advertising benefits the city.
