FC man flees from police, tries to hide in residence

A Forrest City man attempted to hide inside a home on Village Street overnight Wednesday after fleeing from St. Francis County deputies after an alleged domestic disturbance in Caldwell. Deputies were called to Bluebird Lane in Caldwell about midnight where William Franklin, 35, reportedly had a weapon and was attempting to assault a female at that residence. In the incident report, deputies said they knew the county had a bench warrant on file for Franklin on prior charges of rape, first degree battery, aggravated assault and terroristic threatening. Officers learned Franklin was driving a grey Dodge Ram 1500, and while speaking with the victim saw the truck parked across the street. Deputies then attempted to speak with Franklin, who fled in the vehicle for a short distance before stopping. Deputies ordered Franklin to get out of the vehicle, but instead he reportedly became argumentative, and when deputies attempted to open the driver’s side door, Franklin fled, dragging one deputy about 20 feet. Deputies began pursuing Franklin’s vehicle, which led them along Highway 1 into Forrest City at speeds over 100 miles per hour. The chase traveled into the industrial park, to Deaderick and Dawson roads where Franklin’s vehicle struck a stop sign and a railroad crossing sign, damaging each. The chase continued along Graham, Hickey, Murray and Cherry streets, ending at the Village Street residence where Franklin fled on foot and into the residence, after which deputies kicked in the door to the home. Following a brief search, the occupants of the residence told deputies they “did not have any knowledge” of where Franklin went. Believing Franklin was possibly armed and had barricaded himself inside the residence, deputies waited for backup from more deputies and officers with the Forrest City Police Department. Officers entered the residence and found Franklin hiding behind bed. He was taken into custody and transported to the St. Francis County Jail. While searching Franklin’s vehicle, deputies found a black Springfield Armory Hellcat 9mm handgun on the floorboard of the vehicle’s driver’s side along with a fully loaded handgun magazine. A black baseball bat was found in the back floorboard of the truck. Franklin is facing charges included in the previous warrant along with other charges that include six counts of failure to appear, six counts of contempt, fleeing, aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a firearm by certain persons, aggravated assault upon a certified law enforcement officer or an employee of a correctional facility, theft by receiving less than $25,000, fleeing on foot, carrying certain prohibited weapons and first-degree criminal mischief. Online court records also show that Franklin has an extensive criminal history. He was scheduled for Rule 8 hearing on Thursday.
