FEMA assistance for SFC residents available in WM

St. Francis County residents who want to apply for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will have to travel to West Memphis for a face-to face visit with a FEMA representative. The county was recently declared a disaster-stricken county from the storms in early April that produced hail, high winds, flooding and tornadoes across the Delta. SFC Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Zakk Jumper said he learned this week that FEMA does not plan to set up an application site in the county. “For people who are going to be applying for assistance for things like damage to their residences, the application process is going to be different than we first thought,” said Jumper. “Originally, we thought they were going to be bringing a recovery center here and doing the application process face-to face. Now, the only face-to-face place that they are going to be at that is close to us is going to be in West Memphis at the Roberta Jackson Neighborhood Center.” Jumper explained there are multiple ways for residents to complete applications without having to travel to West Memphis. “The Roberta Jackson Neighborhood Center is located at 1300 Polk Avenue in West Memphis,” said Jumper. “That ZIP code, if anyone needs it, is 72301. The center opened on Thursday and will be open through Saturday, May 31, from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. If people don’t want to, or aren’t able to travel to West Memphis, they can go online to the website for disaster assistance. That website is disasterassistance.gov. They can also go through the FEMA App if they have a smartphone.” According to Jumper, calls to the helpline operated by FEMA are answered from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m., Central Time, on a daily basis. “If they choose an online option, they will just have to put their information in there and apply for an application for individual assistance,” said Jumper. “The last way to apply is to call the 800 helpline number they have provided. That number is 1-800-621-3362 and calls are accepted every day. They will have to follow the same steps and give them all of their information for the application.”
