Fire officials remind residents of city law regulating fireworks

Forrest City residents will be allowed to shoot fireworks on Thursday, July 3, and Friday, July 4, from 10:30 a.m. until 10:30 p.m., according to a city ordinance. In conjunction with the holiday and the use of fireworks, the Forrest City Fire Department offers safety tips for those planning to host holiday celebrations. FCFD Fire Marshal Brad Moore said improper use of fireworks results in injuries and fires throughout the nation. "As the Fourth of July approaches, Fire Prevention Officer Justin Sharp and myself want to remind community members to prioritize safety while celebrating with fireworks," said Moore. "Each year, thousands of injuries and fires are reported as a result of improper fireworks usage, and we are committed to ensuring the safety of our residents here in Forrest City." FCFD Fire Prevention Officer Justin Sharp explained injuries caused by fireworks can include burns, lacerations and even more severe injuries. "According to recent statistics, in the United States alone, an estimated 14,700 injuries were treated in emergency rooms due to fireworks-related incidents in 2024," said Sharp. "The dangers of fireworks include burns, lacerations and even more severe injuries. Additionally, fireworks can lead to uncontrolled fires that may damage property and put lives at risk." According to Sharp, there are seven rules when using fireworks that should be followed including everything from using legal fireworks to considering attending professional shows in the area. "If you choose to use fireworks, adhere to local laws and follow these essential safety tips to ensure a safe celebration," said Sharp. "Only use fireworks that are legal in your area. Always have water nearby, whether that be a hose, bucket or sprinkler. Light fireworks outdoors and away from flammable materials. Never attempt to relight duds. Instead, wait 20 minutes and then soak them in water. Maintain a safe distance from others while lighting fireworks. Make sure children are supervised and kept at a safe distance from all fireworks. Finally, consider attending professional fireworks displays instead of using personal fireworks." Moore said fire department officials want to not only encourage everyone to attend the public displays being held in the area this week, but to also celebrate responsibly and make firework safety a priority. "Fireworks can be a fun way to celebrate, but they also pose significant risks if not handled properly," said Moore. "We encourage everyone to consider attending public firework displays led by professionals instead of using personal fireworks at home. We just want to encourage residents to celebrate responsibly and make firework safety a priority. Let's work together to ensure a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July for everyone in our community."
