Motorists reminded to pay attention in school zones

Safety of students and staff is the top priority for school resource officers throughout the area as they get ready to students to return campuses across the Delta. Palestine Police Chief and Palestine-Wheatley School Resource Officer Jeff Nichols told the Times-Herald that one of the main focuses again this year will be the school zone speed limits in the district. According to Nichols, motorists should be paying more attention when driving through school zones and staying off of their phones during this time as well. "We will again be watching the speed of people traveling through our school zones," said Nichols. "Parents and travelers need to remain conscious of their speed as they travel near our schools. People should also not be on their cell phones while driving, but especially as they are going through school zones. The safety of our children needs to be at the forefront of our minds." Nichols explained that the police department has clocked people in the past passing through the school zone traveling 60 mph, or more, over the posted speed limit. "These school zone speed limits do not just apply to when school is in session during the day," said Nichols. "These speed limits go into effect anytime there is a school function being held on campus. That means, after-school functions such as fairs, sporting events and practices. Our school zones are not just active from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. We have seen people flying through these school zones going 60 miles per hour over the speed limit or more. Please be diligent in paying attention to these zones. This is for the betterment of our district and most importantly, the safety of all of our students." According to Nichols, parents need to be patient as school kicks off this year and parents get used to the pick-up and drop-off plans put in place by the district. "I ask that parents be patient as we kick off the new year," said Nichols. "As we start off the new school year, we will have new parents figuring out how pick up and drop off works so the first few weeks may have some hiccups. Just please be patient as we work out any kinks that appear. It will get better as time goes on throughout the year." Nichols said the new PWSD cell phone policy will be enforced this year and if phones are brought onto campus, they need to be locked up and not brought out until after school. "The enforcement of the new cell phone policy really falls on our principals and our superintendent," said Nichols. "Palestine-Wheatley is not the only school to have had issues in the past caused by cell phones in school. If they are brought onto campus, they need to be locked up and not taken out until the end of the day. They have caused problems in school districts everywhere, so students will need to follow the policy that is in their handbooks." According to Nichols, parents should also be checking their students’ backpacks to make sure that items do not make their way into the schools that shouldn't be there, such as pocket knives. "I would also recommend that parents go through your child's backpack, just to make sure that there is nothing in there that shouldn'tbe,”he said.“We don't want a child bringing something to school that shouldn't be there. Make sure they haven't slipped a knife or inadvertently put something in their backpacks that they shouldn't have. Some students could habitually carry a pocket knife and it accidentally makes it toschool. That canbevery dangerous. So, I ask that parents please check these things before their children go to school."
