Musical Coterie held February meeting sharing entertainment of songs of love

Forrest City Musical Coterie members shared songs of love in honor of Valentine’s Day when the group gathered for their monthly meeting in February. The program, “Chorus Accords” was led by Carla Nimocks. Before the program began, Gale Harris shared memories of Coterie member Mary Ann Carter, who recently passed away. “It was a lovely speech about her dear friend,” said Opal Chapman, with Musical Coterie. As the program began, Nimocks thanked pianist Janet Duffel, with Chapman commenting that Duffel is “very gifted and willing to step up.” Nimocks shared that several Coterie members would be participating in that day’s program, including Elaine Shannon, Becky Lawson and Susie Jones. The chorus first performed “Side by Side,” which was written by Harry Woods in 1927. Woods was a farmer by trade, but wrote songs on the side. He penned numerous 1920s standards including, “When the Red, Red Robin (Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin’ Along). He also helped write “Try a Little Tenderness” with Jimmy Campbell and Reg Connelly and composed the music for “I’m Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover” with Mort Dixon writing the lyrics. Woods composed his songs on the piano even though he was born without fingers on his left hand, Chapman noted. Woods wrote “Side by Side,” which became a popular song with The Rhythm Boys, including Bing Crosby, Paul Whiteman and his orchestra, along with numerous others. said Chapman. Coterie member Elaine Shannon sang a couple of Valentine’s Day songs for the group. “As the chorus stood, Janet began playing the song,” said Chapman. “The chorus sang this upbeat song so well and seemed to really enjoy performing it.” Becky Lawson followed the performance of the chorus, singing “The Rose” which was written by Amanda McBroom. The song was made famous by Bette Midler when she recorded it for the 1979 film, “The Rose.” “Becky did a fantastic rendition of the song with such feeling,” said Chapman. “We all enjoyed her song.” Nimocks then directed the chorus in singing, “My Heart Will Go On.” “They gave a wonderful performance of this romantic song,” said Chapman. The song was the theme for the film “Titanic” and performed by Canadian singer Celine Dion. The song was composed by James Horner, with lyrics by Will Jennings and produced by Horner. “My Heart Will Go On” is considered Dion’s signature song, topping the charts in more than 25 countries and designated the best-selling single of 1998. The next performance was by a quartet made up of Susie Jones, Marti Ramsey, Janet Northcutt and Nimocks, who sang “Moon River.” The song was composed by Henry Mancini with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Audrey Hepburn originally performed the song in 1961 in the film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” The song won the Academy Award that year for Best Original Song. “This first one is for you to sing to him if he is one who remembered Valentine’s Day, brought you flowers or candy or even took you out to dinner,” said Shannon. She performed “Squaws Along the Yukon,” singing Ooga Ooga Mooska, which means I love you. The second song she performed was the “Dummy Song,” saying it would be for the man who forgot or didn’t honor Valentine’s Day. She ended the song with the lyrics, “I’ll get more loving from a dumb-dumb dummy than I ever got from you.” “Both songs were so cute, and Elaine made the songs come alive,” said Chapman. Seated at the piano, Jones played “The Way We Were,” from the 1973 film of the same name staring Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford. The film was a box-office success and nominated for several awards, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1974. “Susie began playing the piano, doing a marvelous rendition that took us back to the song that became a gold single selling over 2 million copies,” said Chapman. As the meeting was ending, Alice Miller led the chorus in singing, “Go With a Song in Your Heart.” “This is a favorite of our club, and the chorus did a heartfelt performance that ended our program,” said Chapman. “It truly was a lovely time for us all.”
