New fire trucks officially placed into service

The Forrest City Fire Department held a push-in ceremony Thursday morning to officially enter the city’s two new firetrucks into service. The last push-in ceremony was held in 2022 when the department received a new tender truck. The event, held at Station One at 300 Garland Ave., saw community leaders, residents and FCFD firefighters working together to push the trucks into the station. The trucks, purchased in April, was the first time the city had been able to purchase two new fire trucks at the same time. According to FCFD Chief Jeremy Sharp, the turnout at the event was positive with city staff, elected officials and family members showing up to help put the new vehicles into service. "We had a pretty good turnout," said Sharp. "Alderman Cornesha Wright and Mayor Larry Bryant were there, the staff from city hall was there, some of our family members were there, so we had a pretty good turnout. I would like to say thank you to the city council, mayor and the guys at the fire department who worked on getting these trucks for us." Sharp explained that the history of this ceremony, while brief for the FCFD, traditionally dates back to the 1800s and horse-drawn fire wagons. "When they would get back to the station after a fire, a lot of the horses couldn't back up. This meant they had to unhook the horses and manually push the wagons back into the station. That is where the tradition started and it has carried on ever since,” said Sharp. "This is the second time since we started the tradition to do this type of ceremony, with the first time being when we received the tender truck in 2022," said Sharp. "The newest vehicle we received before the tender was in 2014, I believe. This is the first time the city has actually bought two brand new fire apparatuses. Sharp said the new trucks are able to accomplish more than the old trucks could have as the new trucks are equipped with rope rescue equipment in addition to all other firefighting and extrication equipment. "All of our trucks had extrication equipment on them, but these two new trucks also Hilary J. Trickey • Times-Herald have rope rescue equipment," said Sharp. "That means that if we go to a call where someone has gone off of a bridge or they are down in a gully, we have the stuff on the truck to get that started. These trucks are able to do more than our old trucks could." As the ceremony was about to begin, some firemen had leave and respond to a call at the St. Francis River Bridge on Interstate 40 where an elderly couple traveling in a pickup had driven off the interstate and down the embankment leading to the river. There were no serious injuries reported in that accident.
