Police chief encourages residents to celebrate new year at home

Forrest City Police Chief Ronald Broussard said the best and safest way to ring in the new year is to stay at home. However, Broussard warns those who are planning to venture out to celebrate the holiday that police officers will be highly visible throughout the city on New Year’s Eve. “We are going to be out and about and you will see a heavy police presence in the city. We are planning saturations, rolling checkpoints and checkpoints,” said Broussard, adding that officers will be working overtime to help ensure the safety of the city’s residents. The police chief also warns residents to not shoot guns at midnight as they have in the past. “I encourage people to stay in their homes, especially when it gets close to midnight. People are going to be shooting, and what goes up, comes down,” said Broussard. “If we catch you shooting, we are going to do something about it.” Broussard noted that the city’s ShotSpotter system detected more than 1,500 gunshots around midnight last year as residents rang in the new year. “I was out last year and I’m going to be out on the streets again this year,” said Broussard. “I don’t want any of my officers to go to any calls by themselves.” He said officers likely won’t be able to respond to each report of gunfire that is received, but said they will respond to reports of residences or businesses being damaged by gunfire and anyone who might get struck by the bullets. Arkansas State Police Troop D also plans to be out in force on Tuesday night. Troop D Captain Philip Hydron said troopers will be working saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints across the troop which in addition to St. Francis County includes Lee, Phillips, Monroe, Cross, Crittenden, Woodruff and Prairie counties. Broussard also said that if someone does attend a party or gathering and needs a ride home due to impairment, they may call the FCPD at 870-633- 3434 to receive a courtesy ride. “Don’t drink and drive; call for a courtesy ride,” said Broussard.
