PWSB hires staff for new Pre-K in district

The Palestine-Wheatley School Board met in special session last week to hire personnel for the district’s new preschool. The board also changed the price of meals for faculty and staff and re-entered into a contract with the city of Palestine for a school resource officer. Board members Micah Jo Hilsdon and Dustin Lee were absent. PW Superintendent Ryan Halbert said the district needs seven new employees to staff all of the new Pre-K rooms in the district. "Our Pre-K is coming along nicely and it is on schedule to be up and running by about the time that we want bring kids in," said Halbert. "We need to make hires to staff those Pre-K rooms. In your packet, you have the names of Teva Hamilton, Anna Knowlton, Brittany Prentice, Elizabeth Abram, Priscilla Meredith, Megan Best and Jennifer O'Dell." The board unanimously approved hiring the list of employees as well as Phyllis McDonald as a K-6 teacher. In other business, Halbert explained that after being informed that the school needed to increase the price of meals for adults and extra food for students, the district raised the price to $4.85 for lunch and $2.85 for breakfast. "We were told to go back and recalculate what the price of a meal would be based on what we spend on food," said Halbert. "For lunch, we want to bring the price to $4.85 and for breakfast, price of $2.85. Now, our kids eat free. This is for adults and if students want to buy additional food. We were told to do this, so I am just letting you all know what we had to do." Board members voted to accept the change. According to Halbert, the district also needed to re enter its contract with the city to have Palestine Police Chief Jeff Nichols serve as the district’s school resource officer. "We also have our SRO contract and we do this through the city so it is not a direct payment to him," explained Halbert. "This is the payment to the city and they guarantee to provide us with an officer to be our SRO. One thing that is different this year from last year is that he has gone and gotten his certification and stuff. So, we have a trained SRO and that is great. It is my recommendation that we enter into this contract with the city for our SRO.
