SFC Fair Week offers activities for all ages

It’s Fair Week in St. Francis County and the Wiley T. Jones Fairgrounds is full of excitement as the week’s events begin taking shape. The Kountry Kitchen is open Monday through Friday, offering its traditional plate lunches of area favorites of chicken and dressing, meat loaf and pork chops, chicken and dumplings, and fried chicken. Serving of lunch plates begins at 11 a.m., and continues until they are gone. However, the Kitchen also offers barbecue plate lunches daily through Saturday. The Kountry Kitchen is also open in the evenings, offering its traditional menu of fair favorites. The fairgrounds opens to the public at 5 each evening, with admission being $3 for children up to age 12 and adults 55 and older. Admission is $5 for everyone else. Those entering exhibits in the fair began submitting entries on Sunday and continued to take entries to the exhibit building until 10 a.m., today, after which that building was closed for judging. The exhibit building will be open tonight for everyone wanting to view the exhibits and for exhibitors to see what ribbons their entries were awarded. Entries may also be made today, until 8 p.m., at the horticulture building for the annual flowers show and field crops. The Forrest City Kiwanis Club is hosting Family Night Bingo in the Kountry Kitchen beginning at 6 this evening. Anna Howton, a member of the fair board and Kiwanis, said the event is specifically designed for children, although adults may play along. “We’ll be giving away kid friendly prizes because the event is mainly geared toward kids. We’re hoping families will come out and grab dinner at the Kountry Kitchen while we enjoy playing bingo,” said Howton. Things will pick up at the fair as the week progresses. The carnival midway will be open Wednesday through Saturday. Armbands may still be purchased in advance for $25 through today. Armbands will be $30 each at the fair. “We can no longer sell them at that point,” said Howton. Wednesday is also school day at the fair, where children from area schools will visit the petting zoo and view other attractions that morning. Senior citizens in the area will want to visit the fair Wednesday afternoon for a special session of bingo designed for them from 2 to 4 p.m., in the Kountry Kitchen. At 6 p.m., Wednesday, the fair will feature pedal tractor and sack races, with separate divisions for children depending on age group participation. Junior Auxiliary of St. Francis County will be at the fair on Thursday where they will have pumpkins available for children to paint and offer a photo scavenger hunt to those who want to participate. The big day at the fair will be on Saturday with the classic car show kicking off the day’s event and all of the beauty pageants being held later in the day. The car show begins at noon, followed by the beauty pageants at 2 p.m.
