SFC Health Unit hosting annual flu shot clinic in effort to make community safer

The St. Francis County Health Unit will host a flu shot clinic Tuesday, Sept. 22, offering residents an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming flu season. The clinic will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the health unit located at 413 N. Division St., in Forrest City. There will be no out-of-pocket expense for flu shots, but those with insurance are asked to bring their insurance information. Kathy Barron, a registered nurse and administrator with the St. Francis County Health Unit, said receiving an annual flu vaccination is one of the best ways residents can protect themselves and others from influenza. “Influenza is a very contagious viral illness caused by various types of influenza virus,” Barron said. “The best way to prevent illness, hospitalization or death from influenza is to get a flu shot every year.” According to information provided by the Arkansas Department of Health, influenza can spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing. The virus can also spread when a person touches an object contaminated with the virus and then touches their mouth. Barron said infection rates are generally higher among school-age children, while older adults and young children are among those at greater risk of serious complications. “Serious illness and death are more common among adults ages 65 and older and children younger than two,” Barron said. “People of any age with certain medical conditions may also face a higher risk of complications.” Common flu symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, sore throat, runny nose and cough. Diarrhea and vomiting are uncommon among adults but may occur in children. Barron also noted that people infected with influenza may be contagious before they begin experiencing symptoms. “Adults may spread the virus beginning the day before symptoms develop,” Barron said. “Children may spread the virus several days before symptoms begin and may remain contagious for 10 days or longer.” Health officials encourage those who become sick to stay home, rest, drink plenty of fluids and avoid close contact with others. Residents can also help limit the spread of influenza by covering their nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing and washing their hands frequently. The Arkansas Department of Health notes that influenza and Covid-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses but are caused by different viruses. Because the illnesses can have similar symptoms, testing may sometimes be necessary to determine a diagnosis. The Sept. 22 clinic is open to the public.
