Teenager facing manslaughter in weekend shooting

Forrest City recorded its first murder of the year this weekend when a man was shot in the head while looking over a gun being held by a teenager inside a local convenience store. The shooting occurred about 12:15 a.m., Sunday, at the Star One Gas Station located at 1416 S. Washington, according to reports on file at the Forrest City Police Department. Police identified the victim as LaCorey Marquette Bogard, 25, of Forrest City. Officers were called to the convenience store for a possible self-inflected gunshot wound, but after reviewing security footage from inside the business learned Bogard was allegedly shot in the head by the teenager. The handgun, a black Smith & Wesson .40 caliber with flashlight, was found on the floor at the victim’s feet. FCPD Chief Ronald Broussard said the magazine had been removed from the weapon, but one live round was left in the chamber. Several people were inside the store when the shooting occurred and still present at the scene when officers arrived, according to the report. Bogard was transported to Forrest City Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased. The teen, who Broussard said was apparently managing the store when the shooting occurred, told police the store’s cameras stopped working an hour before the shooting. He also allegedly told police that Bogard was playing with the gun when he shot himself. However, officers were able to obtain access to the video which showed the entire incident. The video shows the teenager sitting behind the cash register while he and Bogard, who was sitting next to him, talked about the gun. The video also showed a second handgun near the cash register at the time of the shooting, but that gun was not present when officers arrived at the scene, according to the report. After reviewing video of the shooting, police arrested the 16- year-old for manslaughter. He is being held in a juvenile center in Jonesboro, according to Broussard. Inside the store, officers also found a clear bag containing three multi-colored pills believed to be Ecstasy. The teenager is also charged with possession of a schedule I or II controlled substance with the purpose to deliver and possession by minor. Following the incident, Forrest City Medical Center was placed on lockdown as officers assisted with crowd control, according to the report.
