Storm damage on Hwy. 1 South not eligible for individual assistance

The damage done on the south end of Forrest City during recent storms has been determined by the state to not be widespread enough for homeowners to receive assistance. St. Francis County Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Zakk Jumper said that while individual assistance is "out the window,” there is still a chance to receive public assistance for the damage that occurred in the area. "On the south end of town and the damage that was done by the recent storm down there, as far as homeowners getting assistance, the state has said there was not enough widespread damage to get any individual assistance," said Jumper. "Individual is kind of out the window, but there was a possibility of getting some public assistance for debris cleanup." Jumper said debris cleanup has been taking place on the south end of Forrest City with a state approved debris burn area put in place to aid in the cleanup effort. "I know that the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief group was out there doing cleanup and moving debris and things like that to the roadway for pickup," said Jumper. "The county has been out there picking it up. There is also a state-authorized burn site to burn vegetation, so we have been out there at the fairgrounds. We had to dig a hole to burn debris there and get rid of it." According to Jumper, damage in the county must hit the monetary threshold of $109,000 before public assistance could be received “As far as any assistance, from what I have been told, there is not going to be any assistance as far as from a state or FEMA standpoint," said Jumper. "The fairgrounds damage will likely fall on the SFC Fair Board, but they could fall under public assistance. It is all going to depend on dollar amounts. We have to hit a county threshold of, I believe, $109,000. "They have to factor in insurance and all of these different things like that," continued Jumper. "Right now they are saying it doesn't look like we will hit that number. We have to turn in all of the paperwork though just in case. We are trying." Jumper said that the Federal Emergency Management Administration may be making a return to the area in an effort to reach more residents within the county. "I don't have a lot of information regarding the recent visit from FEMA here in Forrest City at Woodruff," said Jumper. "They are a government entity and once they take over in an area they handle their own business. They are their own people and they kind of do their own thing. They did leave me a voicemail on Friday saying something about extending days here, but they have not reached back out about that, so I don't know if they will be extending their time here or not." Several local residents visited the FEMA site at Woodruff last week.
